DreamQuest
a game to teach the dynamic process of
person-centered planning
Historically, services for people with disabilities have been systems-centered. Now, more and more, providers need to offer programs and services that an individual has requested. But how can you be sure you are providing what a person really wants, especially if they have trouble communicating?
DreamQuest is a board game used to teach a six-step process for person-centered planning that will insure that both the individual's needs and their dreams are being met. Through DreamQuest, players learn about a process that includes knowing the person, creating a circle of support or dream team, determining what the person's dream is, maximizing resources, implementing a plan, and evaluating the progress toward goals.
Each DreamQuest game contains complete instructions, game pieces, a game board, an answer key, and 120 DreamQuest cards for up to 10 players. The cards give ideas and activities people might use while helping someone design a person-centered plan. Through reflection, discussion, and debate, players learn the steps of the person-centered planning process and invent their own strategies for implementing those steps with someone they support.
Play it with a partner or play it with a team. Either way, you'll be surprised at how many ways there are to put the individual into person-centered supports and services!
