Gentle Teaching
Gentle Teaching is a philosophy for supporting people with disabilities which is based on mutual respect, mutual change, and mutual growth. Emphasis is placed on establishing a solid, positive relationship between people with disabilities and those who support them. With this foundation, change and growth are achieved through teaching new skills and focusing on participation in a logical flow of activities.
In this process, the person's dreams and goals take center stage to direct the support they receive. People with disabilities make more choices and take on more control while those who support them gain empathy and reinforce an environment of trust and safety.
With Gentle Teaching, disruptive or violent behaviors decrease without the use of restraints, punishments, rewards, or controls.
