Family Council
of the Monadnock Region

Serving families with members who have developmental disabilities

"Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much"
-- Helen Keller

Who Are We?
We are a public body created by NH law to help the Area Agency develop a family support plan for our area, and to monitor the implementation of the plan.

We are family members of people with developmental disabilities and acquired brain disorder who live in the Monadnock Region.

What Do We Do?
We enhance, expand and support the role that families play in making decisions about the design and implementation of services and supports in the Monadnock region.

We provide a forum for families to make their concerns, needs and preferences known to their area agency and to its policy makers.

What Programs and Services Does the Family Council Support?
The Council helps MDS budget and oversee expenditure of funds specifically provided by the State of NH for family support. For example, these funds currently provide for camp scholarships, a sibling support group, recreational activities, training and educational programs for families, respite programs such as vacation mini-camps, summer camp inclusion, support for home or vehicle modifications, and emergency family assistance.

Come Join Us!
Currently the Council meets the third Monday of every month from 6:00 to 8:30 PM at the MDS offices, sometimes in Keene and sometimes in Peterborough.

Everyone is always welcome, but it is important to connect ahead with a co-chair to be sure of the place, to be informed of any last minute change or cancellation, and for us to plan time for any business to be presented.

You are also welcome to join our car pooling.

At each meeting, dinner is provided and child/respite care can be made available. Arrangements for child/respite care need to be made in advance with a Co-Chair. Reimbursement of child/respite care and mileage expenses can also be provided.

For more information about the Family Council, to get connected for the next meeting, or for child/respite care arrangements, please contact co-chairs: Betsy Zimmerli at 357-4149 betsyzim@verizon.net or Dick Cornelius at 357-4905 dick.c@verizon.net.
